While attending Cisco’s CiscoLive event in San Diego this week, I had the opportunity to attend John Chamber’s very interesting swan song keynote. Chambers has been at Cisco for 20 years, competing against some the tech titans of the 1990’s. Companies like Nortel, Avaya, Motorola, IBM, etc. who have all either faded away, been bought or mostly moved out of the networking infrastructure market. And there are now newer competitors like F5, Riverbed, etc. But Cisco is still the 800-lb gorilla.
However, the most interesting part of the sessions I have seen is the resurrection of an old team; digitization. Chambers and Cisco, in general, are pushing companies to digitize their businesses. That means putting the infrastructure and business processes in place to use the Big Data they have or will be collecting. Cisco’s view is that only the companies that “digitize” will survive.
